Daredevils use big seventh inning to defeat Greenbrier

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (July 8) – A late-inning rally sparked the Outer Banks Daredevils’ (15-3) to a 9-4 win over the Greenbrier Knights (5-10)Tuesday at First Flight Field.

The Daredevils got off to a rocky start, as the Knights picked up two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Daredevils cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning after an RBI-single by Xavier Barriere scored Tyler Franko from second.

The Knights answered by picking up a run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead back to two runs. However, the Daredevils were able to bang out seven hits off relief pitcher Jarrett Horton in the bottom of the seventh inning to score five runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Daredevils then added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off three hits. The Knights did score a run in the ninth inning, but it was too late, as the Daredevils claimed their 15th victory of the season, 9-4.

Relief pitcher Scott Oberhelman picked up his first win of the season, going two innings without allowing a run. Oberhelman struck out two and allowed a pair of walks and a hit.

Horton was garnered with the loss, allowing a total of nine hits and eight earned runs in two innings. Horton also walked one and struck out one.

The Daredevils finished the game with a total of 13 hits, and had a total of three hits until the seventh inning. Both teams struggled to push runs across the plate, stranding a total of 22 base runners.

The Daredevils face a tough test tomorrow when they host the Tidewater Drillers, who trail the Daredevils by two games in the Tidewater Summer League standings. The gates open at 6, with first pitch to follow at 7:05.

Strong pitching pushes Daredevils past Warriors

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (July 7) – The Outer Banks Daredevils (14-3) used strong pitching to defeat the Virginia Warriors (0-10) by a score of 6-2 Monday at First Flight Field.

 Despite the strong pitching, Daredevils’ starter Harry Ferguson didn’t get the start he was looking for, hitting the first two batters and allowing a single to give the Warriors and early 1-0 lead. However, Ferguson retired the next three batters. Ferguson only allowed one more hit and another run in the third inning before being pulled after five full innings of work.

The Daredevils picked up their scoring in the second inning, scoring three runs off two hits, which included an RBI-single by Chris Childress that scored Brett Johnson. Childress later scored from third on a balk.

The Daredevils added two runs in the fourth inning off three hits, and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cooper Jones picked up his second save of the season, recording six outs and allowing one hit for a final score of 6-2.

At one point, four Daredevils’ pitchers combined to retire 14 straight batters. All four pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts as well.

Rick Hopkins and Childress had three hits each, while Hopkins picked up two runs batted in. As a team, the Daredevils had nine hits.

The Daredevils will return to action Tuesday when they face the Greenbrier Knights. Gates open at 6, with the first pitch to follow at 7:05.

Daredevils makes the most of 4 hits in 3-1 victory over Greenbrier Knights

The Outer Banks Daredevils and Greenbrier Knights both had scoring chances on Thursday, but it was Daredevils that was able to capitalize on them as it pulled out a 3-1 win at First Flight Baseball Complex.

Greenbrier Knights had eight hits compared with Daredevils’ four, but Greenbrier Knights stranded eight runners on base.

Josh Vales racked up eight strikeouts in the Daredevils win. Daredevils’ pitcher gave up just three hits over five shutout innings.

Jarrett Horton took the loss for Greenbrier Knights. He lasted just seven innings, walked six, struck out 10, and allowed two runs.

Daredevils stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Brett Johnson.

After posting one run in the seventh, Daredevils again scored one in the eighth. In the seventh, Daredevils scored on an RBI single by Tyler Franko, scoring Xavier Barriere.

The lone run of the game for Greenbrier Knights crossed the plate in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Robert Lathrop.
