Daredevils take nail-biting win over Warriors

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (May 28) – The Outer Banks Daredevils (2-1) were able to pick up a win over the Virginia Warriors (0-1) Wednesday at First Flight Field by a final score of 4-3.

Virginia was able to pick up a run in the top of the first after an RBI-single from Taylor Erby scored Justin Erby from third. The Daredevils answered the bell in the bottom half of the frame, picking up two runs from Josh Wyatt and Justin Lee.

The Daredevils added another run in the sixth inning, after a sacrifice fly deep to center field by Wyatt scored Dylan Harvey, who crossed the plate three times tonight. Outer Banks added an insurance run in the eighth inning as well, which proved pivotal.

Up by three heading into the final frame, Virginia picked up a pair of runs on a two-run single by Corey King to cut the lead to one. The Warriors were able to load up the bases with two outs, but the Daredevils’ second baseman Wyatt made a spectacular play, backhanding a ground ball up the middle and throwing on to first to end the game.

After allowing three hits and a run in the first inning, the Daredevils’ Harry Ferguson settled down, facing the minimal 12 batters in the next four innings. Ferguson picked up his first win of the season, going five innings, giving up three hits, a walk and a run while striking out three.

Brooks Kirby of the Warriors was on the hook for the loss, going a full eight innings, allowing five hits and four runs, complimented with three strikeouts. The Warriors also stranded eight runners while committing five errors.

Harvey continued to set the table for the Daredevils, reaching base three times. He also stole two bases, bringing his season total to five in three games. Wyatt also got his second and third RBIs tonight.

The Daredevils are back in action Thursday when they take on the Greenbrier Knights at First Flight Field. Thursday is Dare County Youth Sports Appreciation Night at the ballpark, and there will be a pregame concert by Johnny Waters & Company. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm, with the gates opening at 6 p.m.

Outer Banks Daredevils pick up first win of the season

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (May 27) – In the second game of the season, the Outer Banks Daredevils (1-1) picked up their first win of the season over the visiting Little Creek Stars (0-1) in extra innings by a final score of 2-1.

Outer Banks picked up an early lead in the first inning thanks to a hard line drive from Josh Wyatt, which brought home the lead-off batter Dylan Harvey.

The Stars evened things up in the fourth inning when KC Mason brought home Garrett Wente on a single up the middle. That would be the last of the scoring for several innings.

Outer Banks had multiple opportunities to take the lead in the late innings. The Daredevils had runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but stranded two base runners in each inning, respectively.

It took until the 11th inning for the Daredevils to taste victory. Harvey got on base thanks to a leadoff walk, and moved up to second after another walk was issued to Justin Lee. Harvey then moved up on a wild pitch to third, and later trotted home on a passed ball to win the game.

Bailey Libscomb picked up his first win of the season after striking out the side on 18 pitches in the top half of the 11th. Little Creek’s Cameron Parker was charged with the loss, after issuing two walks in two-thirds of an inning’s work. Both teams each used five pitchers in the extended game.

Despite the low-scoring affair, both teams had ample base runners. Little Creek stranded 11 runners, while the Daredevils stranded 14 of their own. Outer Banks out-hit the Stars, 6-4.

The Daredevils are back in action Wednesday when they face the Virginia Warriors at First Flight Field. It will be Interfaith Community Outreach Appreciation Night at the ballpark, sponsored by Max Radio of the Carolinas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with the gates opening at 6.

Outer Banks Daredevils drop 2014 season opener 4 – 1

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (May 26) – The Outer Banks Daredevils opened up the 2014 campaign against the Tidewater Drillers at First Flight Field Monday. The Daredevils (0-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to the Drillers (1-0).

After a pitcher’s duel early on, the scoring picked up in the fourth inning after Tidewater’s Zach Bach drilled a triple to right-center field. In the next at-bat, Tyler Tharp grounded out to short, which allowed Bach to come home.

The Daredevils would answer in the bottom half of the fourth, when Justin Lee singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and then was able to come home after a steal attempt at third. On the attempt, the throw to third base went into left field, allowing Lee to trot home.

Tidewater then answered back with three runs in the seventh inning. Tharp scored on a two-run triple by Nick Fazon. After a misplayed ball by the Daredevils, another run crossed the plate for the Drillers to finish the scoring off for the night, with a 4-1 final.

Despite a strong outing by the Daredevils’ James Walsh, he was held with a no decision. Walsh allowed two hits and one earned run in five innings of work, while striking out nine. Parker Kelly took the loss, allowing three runs – all earned – while allowing two hits in one inning of work. Gabriel Santana picked up the win, throwing three and two-thirds innings of one-hit ball. Santana struck out four and issued one walk.

Despite six errors by the Drillers, the Daredevils couldn’t convert on opportunities. Outer Banks stranded eight base runners, which includes the bases loaded in the second inning with one out.

One bright spot on the day was the Daredevils’ Lee. He scored the only run of the game, and reached base three times.

The Daredevils will be back in action Tuesday when they face the Little Creek Stars. Gates open at 6 p.m., with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
