Daredevils win sixth-straight contest

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (June 11) – It may have been two weeks since the Outer Banks Daredevils (6-1) faced the Tidewater Drillers (4-2), when the Daredevils dropped the opening game of the season against the Drillers 4-1.

However, Wednesday proved to be a different day, as the Daredevils won their sixth-straight game over Tidewater in convincing fashion by a score of 7-2.

When the Daredevils scored at First Flight Field Wednesday evening, it was in bunches. The Daredevils put a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings, while scoring three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Daredevils allowed the Drillers to score two runs in the seventh frame, but that was all the closer Tidewater would get.

Outer Banks was paced by another strong pitching performance by James Walsh. Walsh threw a spotless five innings, striking out eight while allow four hits and two walks. It was Walsh’s second win on the season, and has not allowed a run since giving up two to the same Tidewater Drillers back on May 26.

On offense, the Daredevils were once again led by leadoff man Josh Wyatt. Wyatt drove in three runs, which included a two-run triple to left center to bring home a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Wyatt leads the team in RBIs with 10. Xavier Barrier and Chris Childress were the other two Daredevils to collect two hits on the evening.

Most important, the win proved to have a big impact on the standings early on in the season. Heading into Wednesday’s contest, the Daredevils were atop of the Tidewater Summer League by a half game over Tidewater.

The Daredevils finish off their schedule for the week Thursday when they play host to the Little Creek Stars. Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by OBX Chevrolet and Buick gets underway when the gates open at 6 p.m., and continue with a special pre-game mini-concert performed by Johnny Waters and Company. The band will be on hand to also sing the National Anthem, with the first pitch set for 7:05.

The visiting Warriors got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning, followed by another run in the third frame. The Daredevils returned the favor in the third and fourth innings with runs of their own. Virginia picked up another run in the sixth, while the Daredevils evened things up at three with a run of their own in the seventh inning.

The eighth inning of Monday’s game was by far the most action-packed. Virginia scored four runs in the top half of the frame off two runs and an error. Going into the bottom half of the inning, things looked bleak for the Daredevils.

However, that was not the case. The leadoff batter Josh Wyatt reached base on a walk, while Brett Johnson hit a single up the right side and Corey Ballard drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Xavier Barrier also drew a walk to bring in a run. Tyler Franko and Graham Barnes each followed with singles to bring in a few more runs, and Dylan Harvey drove in Franko for the go-ahead run with a double to right-center field.

Kyle Spruill, who came on to relieve Wes Carmichael in the eighth inning with two outs, picked up the win, after allowing a runner to reach third base with one out. Spruill stuck out the next two batters to finish off the Warriors.

In total, six Daredevils collected RBIs, while Harvey and Franko had two each. The Daredevils also collected 10 hits while stranding five runners.
