Daredevils win streak put on hold

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (June 10) — After winning their fifth-straight contest Monday, the Outer Banks Daredevils (5-1) will have to put their win streak on hold as Tuesday’s Tidewater Summer League Contest against the Greenbrier Knights has been postponed due to unplayable field conditions. Last nights and this mornings rain has left the field unplayable. We regret to announce this cancellation. No makeup date at this time has been announced.

Daredevils win fifth game in a row against Virginia

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (June 9) – In a back-and-forth game at First Flight Field Monday, the Outer Banks Daredevils (5-1) picked up a 9-8 win over the Virginia Warriors to extend their win streak to five games. It was Dare Education Foundation Appreciation Night, and DEF Executive Director Elisabeth Piff was on hand to throw out our first pitch.

The visiting Warriors got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning, followed by another run in the third frame. The Daredevils returned the favor in the third and fourth innings with runs of their own. Virginia picked up another run in the sixth, while the Daredevils evened things up at three with a run of their own in the seventh inning.

The eighth inning of Monday’s game was by far the most action-packed. Virginia scored four runs in the top half of the frame off two runs and an error. Going into the bottom half of the inning, things looked bleak for the Daredevils.

However, that was not the case. The leadoff batter Josh Wyatt reached base on a walk, while Brett Johnson hit a single up the right side and Corey Ballard drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Xavier Barrier also drew a walk to bring in a run. Tyler Franko and Graham Barnes each followed with singles to bring in a few more runs, and Dylan Harvey drove in Franko for the go-ahead run with a double to right-center field.

Kyle Spruill, who came on to relieve Wes Carmichael in the eighth inning with two outs, picked up the win, after allowing a runner to reach third base with one out. Spruill stuck out the next two batters to finish off the Warriors.

In total, six Daredevils collected RBIs, while Harvey and Franko had two each. The Daredevils also collected 10 hits while stranding five runners.

Daredevils pick up lopsided win over Little Creek

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (June 2) – It may have taken six innings for things to get started, but the Outer Banks Daredevils (3-1) picked up a crooked-looking win by the score of 8-0 over the Little Creek Stars (1-3) Monday night at First Flight Field.

Both teams had a combined three hits after five innings, but the Daredevils were able to pick up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leadoff man Josh Wyatt drilled pitch down the left field line, which was good for a standup double with one out. With two outs, Dylan Harvey took a pitch the opposite way to score Wyatt from second. Brett Johnson was up next, and took another pitch into right field to score Harvey, who swiped second. Harvey now has seven stolen bases in four games.

Outer Banks pick up six more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which proved to be more than insurance for the Daredevils. The Daredevils batted around the order and recorded five hits in the inning alone. Weston Glienke came on to pitch the top of the ninth inning, and had no problem closing the door on the Stars to keep the shutout intact.

James Walsh picked up the win for the Daredevils on the mound, throwing five innings of shutout ball while only allowing one hit. Walsh struck out two and issued two walks all on 61 pitches of work.

For the Stars, Steven Butt recorded the loss, going five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Butt also struck out six while receiving no run support, as the Stars only collected two hits the entire game.

With the Daredevils now riding a three-game winning streak, they now turn their attention to the Greenbrier Knights, who travel the Kill Devil Hills to take on the Daredevils Wednesday, June 4th. The gates open at 6 p.m., with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05. It is Interfaith Community Outreach Appreciation Night at the ballpark, sponsored by Max Radio of the Carolinas and WVOD 99.1 The Sound.

Daredevils take nail-biting win over Warriors

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (May 28) – The Outer Banks Daredevils (2-1) were able to pick up a win over the Virginia Warriors (0-1) Wednesday at First Flight Field by a final score of 4-3.

Virginia was able to pick up a run in the top of the first after an RBI-single from Taylor Erby scored Justin Erby from third. The Daredevils answered the bell in the bottom half of the frame, picking up two runs from Josh Wyatt and Justin Lee.

The Daredevils added another run in the sixth inning, after a sacrifice fly deep to center field by Wyatt scored Dylan Harvey, who crossed the plate three times tonight. Outer Banks added an insurance run in the eighth inning as well, which proved pivotal.

Up by three heading into the final frame, Virginia picked up a pair of runs on a two-run single by Corey King to cut the lead to one. The Warriors were able to load up the bases with two outs, but the Daredevils’ second baseman Wyatt made a spectacular play, backhanding a ground ball up the middle and throwing on to first to end the game.

After allowing three hits and a run in the first inning, the Daredevils’ Harry Ferguson settled down, facing the minimal 12 batters in the next four innings. Ferguson picked up his first win of the season, going five innings, giving up three hits, a walk and a run while striking out three.

Brooks Kirby of the Warriors was on the hook for the loss, going a full eight innings, allowing five hits and four runs, complimented with three strikeouts. The Warriors also stranded eight runners while committing five errors.

Harvey continued to set the table for the Daredevils, reaching base three times. He also stole two bases, bringing his season total to five in three games. Wyatt also got his second and third RBIs tonight.

The Daredevils are back in action Thursday when they take on the Greenbrier Knights at First Flight Field. Thursday is Dare County Youth Sports Appreciation Night at the ballpark, and there will be a pregame concert by Johnny Waters & Company. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm, with the gates opening at 6 p.m.
