Daredevils use big seventh inning to defeat Greenbrier

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (July 8) – A late-inning rally sparked the Outer Banks Daredevils’ (15-3) to a 9-4 win over the Greenbrier Knights (5-10)Tuesday at First Flight Field.

The Daredevils got off to a rocky start, as the Knights picked up two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Daredevils cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning after an RBI-single by Xavier Barriere scored Tyler Franko from second.

The Knights answered by picking up a run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead back to two runs. However, the Daredevils were able to bang out seven hits off relief pitcher Jarrett Horton in the bottom of the seventh inning to score five runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Daredevils then added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off three hits. The Knights did score a run in the ninth inning, but it was too late, as the Daredevils claimed their 15th victory of the season, 9-4.

Relief pitcher Scott Oberhelman picked up his first win of the season, going two innings without allowing a run. Oberhelman struck out two and allowed a pair of walks and a hit.

Horton was garnered with the loss, allowing a total of nine hits and eight earned runs in two innings. Horton also walked one and struck out one.

The Daredevils finished the game with a total of 13 hits, and had a total of three hits until the seventh inning. Both teams struggled to push runs across the plate, stranding a total of 22 base runners.

The Daredevils face a tough test tomorrow when they host the Tidewater Drillers, who trail the Daredevils by two games in the Tidewater Summer League standings. The gates open at 6, with first pitch to follow at 7:05.
